ESL Worksheets
Oral practice - question tags
Worksheet description
Pairwork activity to practice question tags and responses to them. Two sets of 10 statements that students ask and answer using question tags: You live near here, don't you?
Instructions
Students work in pairs - A and B. Give one set of statements, A or B, to each student.
Stage 1 - preparation
Tell students they should guess their partner's response and choose the appropriate form of the statement. They should also add the tag. They should not ask their partner at this stage.
Stage 2 - speaking practice
Students read their statements with correct tags and see if their guesses were correct.
Note
It is useful to do preliminary work on intonation, and also on different responses to question tag statements. In particular, when the first speaker makes an incorrect guess, a simple Yes, I [did] / No I [didn't] can be confusing. Does the yes or no follow the grammar of the statement or confirm / contradict the speaker's guess?
Responses other than Yes, I did / No, I didn't can be used:
You didn't go to the meeting, did you?
I did, actually.
