ESL Worksheets
IIlnesses and injury - collocations and mime cards
Worksheet description
Twelve mime cards: 'I was playing football and I twisted my ankle' etc.
Matching exercise - I've broken my | leg arm; I've got | toothache sunburn etc.
Instructions
(1) Miming game
Cut up the twelve mime cards and place them face down.
Students take it in turns to pick up a card. They can say the words that are not underlined but not those that are. They should mime these underlined words.
Other students in the group try to say the complete sentence.
If done competitively, students either try to 'win' cards by being the first to say the correct sentence. Or they can divide the cards between them and then try to lose all their cards by miming effectively. First to have all their sentences guessed wins.
(As an alternative to miming, students can communicate the underlined words and phrases in any way they wish except by translation.)
(2) Card matching
Distribute the nine dark-coloured cards (sentence beginnings).
Place the remaining cards face-down in the centre of the group.
Students take it in turns to turn over the cards. If they match they get a point.
One student can act as the umpire (checker) using the answer sheet. (This might seem an unchallenging role but it requires the student to look carefully at the examples. And it's always a popular!)
As an speaking extension, when students make a match, they could talk about a time they suffered from the complaint described or suggest a treatment etc.
